University of Maryland bus strikes large metal pole

A University of Maryland bus struck a metal pole Wednesday morning in College Park, resulting in reported minor injuries of 30 people, the Prince George’s County Fire and EMS Department said.

Fire crews responded to a rescue call about 10:20 a.m. to Baltimore Avenue and University Boulevard,the fire department said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. Thirty people were transported with minor injuries, the fire department said in another post.

A total of 56 passengers were aboard the charter bus, the fire department said.

Authorities believe the bus was carrying University of Maryland students, according to a fire department spokesman.

Baltimore Avenue was closed to vehicles after the crash, according to the University of Maryland Police Department.

Prince George’s County police and University of Maryland police are investigating, the fire department said.
